1. Which is the last best play you saw and why?
It is difficult to select a play by this standard. I rate plays as good plays or bad plays and there are several plays which I would rate as good plays; plays that have influenced me as a person as well as an actor. Some of them would be THE PROPHET, SANDHYA CHAYA, DAYASHANKAR KI DIARY, JULOOS, etc.

2. Your favourite adda to see a play…
Prithvi.

3. Your favourite playwright…
Many. A couple of examples would be Dario Fo and Badal Sircar.

4. Your favourite play-character…
Amognst the several characters that I have played , I have loved the character played by me in THE OPEN COUPLE. This person is filled with so many shades that with each performace I have discovered different angles in his personality that leads him to behave the way he does. His behaviour cannot be pardoned but yet he is only too human.

5. A play you would like to see filmed. Why?
THE OPEN COUPLE. It’s a play which has the potential to work also as a film.

6. A novel/short story you would like to see on stage? Why?
I would love to see Manto’s work coming live on stage. There are several of his works which are contemporary even today and I assume many groups have tried them as well. I would love to see “ Kaale Hasshiye “ by Manto to be staged someday .

7. The most hilarious play you have seen…
It might sound very selfish but honeslty, I have to yet see a play like THE OPEN COUPLE in terms of being hilarious. It is amazing the way in which the audience starts responding right from the announcement till the very end. Of course I have seen some other plays too which I have found hilarious like C FOR CLOWNS, GARAM KAMRA…

8. An important play (but ignored):
NAYAK KHALNAYAK VIDHUSAK by Surendra Verma.

9. A play character you would like to “dialogue” with…
The character played by Kumud Mishra in SHAKKAR KE PAANCH DAANE.

10. A classical play that you should have read…
So many ….. I mustt admit I have not read the classics as much as I would like to . Shakespeare , Sophoceles are some of the writers of whose work I have some knowledge.

11. A play that changed your perception about the theatre…
JULOOS by Badal Sircar

12. How do you regard the Mumbai theatre scene?
It’s vibrant. Theatre is doing pretty good in the city . The biggest problem now is that there are not enough spaces for groups to perform regularly. I hope we can get some more spaces in the city which are like NCPA ( experimental ) & Prithvi.

13. If you have ever been a part of a theatre production/s, can you recall an event that was insightful, significant or simply humorous?
I was recently part of Working Title’s production of the children’s play ONCE UPON A TIGER. It was the first time I was performing in front of a house packed with children ..right from 5 years to 15 years. We did 13 shows at Prithvi and I can assure you each show was something that we can’t forget. Children are the most non-assuming audience you can get and ther response is unadulterared and pure. We would be standing there performing for them but if they found the adults in the play not upto their mark, they would simply get distracted and go back to their chips and chatter. All the training we have had was at a naught in such situations. It was hilarious for us to see that this audienc does not care for anything except for content which is relative to them in spite of how hard we try as actors.

14. Can you think of a foreign production that you found remarkable? Why ?
The last one I saw was Tim Supple’s A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S Dream. I found the production remarkable in terms of the great speactale it was. The director was able to produce tantalizing effects with the body movement of the actors and through the use of technology.

15. Your favourite director/actor/music or set designer…
Amongst actors on stage today , Shiekh Sami and Kumud Mishra

16. Life in the theatre without the humble batata-wada or the cutting chai or if you please brownies that are snuggling chocolate bits… or can you recall the best gastronomic experience you’ve had in the precincts of the theatre to date?
No sir….Theatre bina cutting chai to wahi baat ho gayi ke chini bina mithai. I just can’t imagine theatre without my cutting chai served in those great glasses which have be around for eternity !""
