A play that changed your perception about the theatre

GAJAB KAHANI (by Aasakta Kalamanch

How do you regard the Mumbai theatre scene?

It is really changing with new, alternative performance spaces. People are daring to experiment and there is a lot of variety because the financial risk level is reduced.

Have you read any interesting books/articles concerning the theatre? Why did you find them interesting?

Recently, I read an article in Mid-day (I guess), about how Mumbai is riding the wave of experimental art spaces. This article was interesting because it captured the variety and ideas that are possible and are being explored by art lovers (both performers and audience). It talks about the audience who is keen to accept fresh content and is open to experiments.

If you have ever been a part of a theatre production/s, can you recall an event that was insightful, significant or simply humorous?

Recently in a rehearsal the director was instructing an actor on his scene while I was on a break. This other actor was super foodie and if any food was around, it would catch his attention. Since I was on a break, I opened a packet of biscuits and the crackle of the wrapper snapped his attention. All the time while the director was instructing him, he had his unwavering attention on the biscuits. I could see him gulping his saliva. When he went back to perform, he did exactly the opposite of what he was asked to do.

A significant Indian production that you may have witnessed

I had watched ZANGOORA four years ago and it left an imprint on me of how vivid a stage production can be.

Life in the theatre without the humble batata-wada or the cutting chaiā€¦ or can you recall the best gastronomic experience you've had in the precincts of the theatre to date?

There would be no theatre existing without chai. Period.
