A WEEK LONG INTENSIVE RESIDENTIAL WORKSHOP

ENSEMBLE PHYSICAL THEATRE TRAINING And SHAKESPEARE'S 'MACBETH'
- An introduction to Self-With-Others exploring Shakespeare's MACBETH.

You are invited to a six-day introduction to Self-With-Others - an improvisation-based physical approach to performance training.

Self-With-Others is a psychophysical approach which encourages the bringing together of mind and body into every action, the unifying of thought and action. It is based on a set of clear principles - the most important of which is the need for performers to find deep pleasure in their work. If you are not enjoying your work, you are not doing it properly.

Each morning we will train together through a process called 'Self-With-Others' which John Britton has been developing for nearly 20 years. Self-With-Others is a physical, improvisation-based approach to developing physical skill and presence that forms the basis of all Johns directing work and the teaching at The DUENDE School of Ensemble Physical Theatre.

Each afternoon you will spend some time developing your solo and small group performing skills and confidence, and we will spend some time exploring choric & ensemble ways of staging some scenes from Shakespeares Macbeth - giving you a direct experience of how this approach to physical performance translates into a creative process.

This workshop will offer an introduction to Self-With-Others - combining fixed and semi-improvised physical training exercises to develop spontaneity, physical discipline and stamina, connectedness, reactivity, use of body/voice, presence, liveness and the ability to give detailed and developmental feedback to self and to others.

ABOUT JOHN BRITTON

John is the founder and Artistic Director of DUENDE. He is also the Director of The DUENDE School of Ensemble Physical Theatre.
John cites the core influences on his work as being the tradition of European Laboratory Theatre that grew from Stanislavsky and Meyerhold and was further developed by Grotowski. Significant contemporary practitioners such as Nunez, Barba and Zarrilli are also important to his work. The other key influence comes from the developments in dance improvisation that emerged from America in the 1950s, especially as further developed by Al Wunder in Australia. Self With Others is the heart of Johns work as a teacher, director and performer.
