Essay Communications with Artistic Director, Salim Arif at the helm has completed its tenth year in March 2012. A journey which started with the play, GHALIBNAAMA has since had other noteworthy productions like KHARAASHEIN, AAPKI SONIYA, KACHCHE LAMHE, HUM SAFAR, and a Gulzar trilogy with ATTANNIYAN, ARRE O HENRY, SUNTE HO and LAKEEREIN.
A week long festival at Prithvi theatre from 15th July to 20th July 2012 is planned with shows of GANDHARI (directed by Arvind Gaur of Asmita Theatre, Delhi), HUM SAFAR, MANTO MANTRA, KHARAASHEIN (which completes its tenth year on 18th July 2012). Aishvarya Nidhi from Australia will perform the monologue GANDHARI on 15th July to inaugurate this festival.
Javed Siddiqi's HUM SAFAR, with Harsh Chhaya and Lubna Salim will also be performed on the opening day of the festival. A very special show called MANTO MANTRA, dedicated to works of Saadat Hasan Manto, one of the greatest short story writers of the sub-continent will be performed on 17th July. Gulzar's KHARAASHEIN with Atul Kulkarni, Lubna Salim and Yashpal Sharma is back on public demand in the festival on 18th July.
A highlight of this festival is going to be the performance of Gulzar's stage version of Tagore's STREER PATRO and his own story MARD with Lubna Salim in the lead. Titled SUNTE HO,a double bill, the play will be performed on 19th July. STREER PATRO is about Mrinalini, who is forced to question the ways that women are subject to in a patriarchal society. MARD is about a woman Rama who finds herself answerable to another growing man who happens to be her own son. The festival will close with the premiere shows of Gulzar's ARRE O HENRY, an adaptation of O Henry's short stories with Bakul Thakkar, Jamil Khan, Nissar Khan and Lubna Salim on 20th July.
