Athol Fugard's legendary play THE ROAD TO MECCA is a compelling conflict between artist impulses and social barriers. Poetic and full of light, the play is based on the life of Helen Martins, born 1897 in South Africa, who created numerous cement sculptures around her house and was ostracised by the community for her passion and giving up religion.
Banjara Theatre's production of THE ROAD TO MECCA is a socio-political drama set in a village in south Goa in the current time, where the townspeople are threatened by Helen Braganza's eccentricity and want to send her to an old age home. But a younger woman, Tara, a school teacher from Mumbai, a kindred spirit, wants to save the woman and her home. The play celebrates creative energies of free soaring spirit and conquers the politics of religion.
