THE RAMAYANA was originally performed as a one-woman solo tour-de-force by celebrated actress Jalabala Vaidya, who performed it on Broadway, London’s West End, United Nations Headquarters, National Theatres of Europe, Canada, as far as the Fiji Islands, as well as in 35 Indian cities and towns: from Mumbai to Manipal, Kolkata to Jammu, Delhi to Calicut -- to packed houses, rave reviews and standing ovations worldwide creating dramatic history. From 2010 onwards it evolved into a multi-actor play, creating an exciting and innovative theatrical experience.
This is the first staging of the play since Jalabala Vaidya passed away in 2023. With its superbly talented cast of young actors rigorously trained by Gopal and Jalabala, the production retains the dramatic intensity of Gopal Sharman’s play and explores the human characters of Rama and Sita, with reverence, delicacy and insight, through some of the most exquisite stage writing in modern theatre,
Above all, the play explores the magic and mystery of Rama “in whose voice the dumb babble love’s profundities and the lame prance gaily over unscaled peaks.”
