Blustering confidence and an utterly confused mind is what BANSURI is largely about. There is not much to be said about the script in short but Sunil Shanbags direction and performances by the cast in general, redeem the play.
A lone sofa placed in the centre of the performance space acts as a set as well as a prop for Bansuri, the girl whose name is exploited as a metaphor for self-realization. The metaphor however is not too successful as Bansuris trajectory oscillates between not knowing what she really stands for and her desire to make her life more fulfilling and meaningful.
At the same time because of the crisp direction and performances, the play manages to hold ones attention. Yamini Namjoshi is particularly energetic in her portrayal of Bansuri. The rest of the cast too is fairly competent although the motivations of certain characters are not very clear. All in all, it is worth a watch for the theatre product as a whole has a certain attitude and style to it. One will not come away completely disappointed.
It must also be mentioned that BANSURI marks the debut of Divya Jagdale as a playwright. Divya has already proved to be a good actor, displaying remarkable spontaneity at times but as a writer, she evidently has a long way to go.
