Dharmaputra

By MTG editorial

Theatre Unit and Awishkar's DHARMAPUTRA is a dark exploration of relationships- man-woman, husband-wife, parent-child. Originally written in Marathi, Professor Mahesh Elkunchwar's DHARMAPUTRA was not performed in any language. This is the first Hindi performance of the play.

The play takes a morbid look at the sexual life of a couple who vent out their individual frustrations on their adopted young son. The play is a chilling commentary on the ruthlessness that familial relationships are capable of generating. At the same time, it questions the very ethical framework that people take for granted.

Sadism, obviously not overt, forms an intrinsic part of this very dark play. Its two actors convey its presence menacingly enough. The director, Chetan Datar, says of it: "It is one of the heaviest, simplest plays I have read, full of black humour and loaded with theatricality".

On a more personal note, I'd however say that there is no humour to the play, dark or otherwise. This is plain psychodrama at its terrible best as against Datar's: "heaviest, simplest..."

Worth a watch, DHARMAPUTRA is however not meant for children and adolescents. Avoid taking children especially. Its hard hitting subject aside, in a play like this, you cannot afford distraction of any sort.
