In Vijay Tendulkar's overall body of playwriting, Sakharam Binder holds a distinct place. The play is not considered unique merely because it openly depicts the sexual life of Sakharam (or Champa). Rather, its uniqueness and value are emphasized when we examine what kinds of experiences are brought together in the play, how society reacts to those experiences, and whether these experiences fit-or fail to fit-within the framework of the values that society upholds.
