Dear Reader,

We highlight two interviews this week. The first of these is with Jean Michel Adam, a Paris-based scenographer and artist. Jean Michel Adam's beautiful ''objects'' such as the lamp shades he exhibited at the Galerie des Saints Pères in Paris, are partly inspired by his scenography for the theatre. I found some of his lamp shades evocative of grand stage/architectural design and when I discovered that he was in fact a man of the theatre, I had to have an interview. Jean Michel Adam has been generous with his answers that have been painstakingly translated from French by his wife Séverine Vincent. It is an interview long overdue. It is personal and insightful of the specialised skill-sets that theatre requires and how each of the aspects of the theatre must come together to make a good production.

Our second interview is with Sachin Jadhav who has worked with children at the Salaam Bombay Trust for six years now. There, Sachin, an actor, singer and ex-student of the Academy of Theatre Arts (Mumbai University), trains the children in theatre and uses theatre as a tool to help the disadvantaged children engage with learning and deal with their problems. His two productions - GHERA, based on Bertolt Brecht's THE CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRLE and PYAAR SACCHAA SABSE ACCHAA were staged at the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival this year. Sachin shares his experience of working with the children.

Among our other updates, we have actor Sukant Gohel's 'Theatre Speak', our review of Peter Brook's and Marie-Hélène Estienne's production BATTLEFIELD, which had its Indian premiere at the NCPA last week and news about the Academy of Theatre Arts'annual theatre festival (9th National Vasant Natyotsav) at Mumbai University.

Lalit Kala Kendre at Pune University has organised a seminar focused on three Marathi playwrights - Shyam Manohar, CP Deshpande and Dilip Jagtap, which will run over two days- 18th and 19th March. The seminar will host eminent speakers who will speak about the three significant dramatists.

Akvarious Productions is staging a Fringe Festival at the Cuckoo Club, an initiative by Hive. The three-day festival includes stories and monologues and will feature acts by Akvarious' popular actors such as Adhir Bhat, Hussain Dalal and Kashin Shetty, among others.

The acclaimed Pune-based theatre company Aasakta bagged five awards at the recently concluded META (Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards) festival for its play MEIN HUUN YUSUF AUR YEH HAI MERA BHAI. They will be in Mumbai next week with the play and are also bringing their latest production MUKAAM DEHRU JILAA NAGAUR, inspired by Paresh Mokashi's original farce MUKKAMPOST BOMBILWADI. Both plays will be staged at Prithvi.

The India Theatre Forum has announced its second edition of SMART (Strategic Management in the Art of Theatre), a programme for theatre groups and individual artistes to gain experience to be better managers so that they can sustain their theatre practice without sacrificing their creativity. The programme is in three phases and starts in July this year. Applications are invited.
