A StagePlayer Theatre Production, KHOON KARAYCHAY is a Marathi adaptation of the Tony award winning play SLEUTH by Anthony Shaffer. Sameer Garud's play is the best of its genre; a dramatic thriller with only two actors. The story deals with Mr.Rajwade (Rohan Gujar), an upper class aging triumphant writer, and Ajay Talwalkar (Amey Borkar), a struggling actor. Their common interest is Rajwade's wife, Sai, with whom Ajay has been having an affair. After knowing about the affair, Rajwade is quite happy to divorce his wife, but at the same time he feels insulted by the whole thing and wants his revenge.
The plot takes off with Rajwade's mind games as he pulls off an insurance scam by setting up a mock burglary of his household's khaandani haar. As numerous twists and turns follow, the rival pair, with ever increasing momentum and anxiety, endeavour to outwit each other. It is a tale filled with mystery and suspense, which keeps you guessing.
The play undoubtedly belongs to Rohan Gujar, who delivers a splendid performance. Amey Borkar acts decently as the charming young lover. The pair play their parts well They are able to reveal and conceal things, as desired by their characters. The dialogues by Sameer Garud is brilliant, and the chemistry between the two actors is dynamic.
Set design turns Rajwade's gorgeous palatial house into a dazzling mansion of madness. Music by Abhishek creates a playful yet ever-so-slightly uncomfortable mood. Rohan & Amey direct themselves perfectly, and set up an atmosphere of suspense in the staging of scenes and through their thoughtful choice of lights. Costumes for the "robbery" part are quite impressive. The clever cat and mouse game certainly outwitted me. You will definitely enjoy watching this Marathi thriller on stage.
