AFTER THE VOWS Review
Post-wedding confusion, mistaken identity, and reel crazy fanatics - the chaotic energy of the modern world comes together in AFTER THE VOWS, a funny and brilliant play written and adapted by Abhitej Gupta. If there was ever a play that could capture the messy, chaotic yet entertaining nature of Indian family functions, it would be this play.
A newly married couple, the bride's over-the-top mother and lecture-prone father, a spiritual aura-obsessed woman, her conniving, misguided friend, and an event help who doubles as the videographer all come together in this play as they try to meet an important government official. Funny, over the top, filled with characters that you would meet in a TV serial, the hysterical antics made it impossible to look away from the action.
An adaptation of Anton Chekov's The Wedding, this is a fun, unique, and modern take on the narrative set in contemporary India with characters that are real, relatable, and funny.
It was an intimate and immersive experience, with most audience members gathered around the main table, where most of the play and action took place. In such a small and contained space, not for one second was there a dull moment. The lighting was mostly focused on the tables and the characters seated at the table, and the music never overpowered or distracted the audience from the main action, which was the characters' shenanigans.
The performances were hilarious as the actors played off each other's energy and vibe. The use of modern technology, the combination of Kannada, Hindi, and English, and the hilarious premise of the play made for a thoroughly enjoyable experience as the audience members laughed loudly throughout the play. This play shows that a Chekov story can still feel fresh and relatable for Indian audiences.
