 AMERICA HAZIR HO Review

Let's get this clear at the outset, Makrand Deshpande is not acting this time. Helming this venture as the writer, director - he lends his star presence by introducing the play and then posing for selfies with fans. His lanky frame and Einstein mane draw enough attention!

The ongoing political scenario in the US of America is a ripe topic for creative deliberation and dissent, not surprising then if Deshpande takes a shot at it. The play takes a 360 degree view at the various happenings in the US, of the world peace broking claims by President Trump, native Americans, immigrants, return of racist ideology and the atrocities waged by the security personnel. Various types of victims and perpetrators take stand in this theatrical trial.

It is not your quintessential courtroom with a judge, lawyer and the accused in the stand, rather it is an event stage that's being propped up by the carpetwala, he rolls out a red carpet each time a character steps forth make a statement. There are various elements of the American society stating their cases - the native American, a wronged mother, an actress with a voice, black American and other immigrants including a Nigerian Muslim representative in a shiny sequined skull cap. Final appearance is by the security official pleading unconvincingly, "America is a white country."

The cast is mostly new and enthused, they deliver convincing performances - Ninad as the jholer (trickster), Chitransh as the darban, Richa as the Native American, Sowmya as the mother are impressive. Technical crew is competent, Rahate and Deva's simple and modern backdrop of Trump's head with the star spangled banner flapping about makes for an interesting visual detail.

It is a thought triggering political satire, it does leave you wondering about the global unrest for a while. Does it create a deep impact? A question that the audience can decide. Kudos to Deshpande, for pulling out another production from his hat err...gray and curly mop of hair.
