Mauli, a soldier who carries deep resentment towards Lord Vitthal and Pandharpur, leaves for his posting in Siachen while his wife, Saguna, dreams of joining her first Wari to Pandharpur. As life on the border brings him face-to-face with people of different faiths and the harsh realities of life and death, Mauli is forced to confront the wounds he has carried for years. The play follows his journey of faith, duty, relationships, and self-acceptance.
The script by Mayur Sarakale and Ashutosh Popat Jare is one of the play's strongest assets, opening on a refreshing note with a morning folk song by the Vasudeva and the quiet ritual of a soldier packing to leave for Siachen. That opening immediately establishes both the cultural setting and the emotional stakes. The writing moves comfortably between humour, emotion, and devotion, allowing these shifts to feel organic rather than forced. While a few narrative turns, particularly in the climax, become predictable, tighter direction and some trimming of the timeline could have sustained the momentum more effectively. Even so, the script leaves a lasting emotional impression.
Ashutosh Popat Jare stages the play with a clear eye for visual grandeur, but the emotional moments would have benefited from more restraint. The production rarely allows pauses to settle, often moving from one dramatic beat to the next before an emotion can fully land. A few montage sequences feel unnecessary, and some scenes continue beyond their natural life, affecting the overall rhythm. Tighter pacing and greater trust in silence could have made the emotional journey more impactful.
Rohit Mane delivers a natural performance as Mauli, staying true to the character's emotional journey without overplaying it. Sanika Renuke, as Saguna, brings warmth to the stage with her expressive presence and a pleasing singing voice. Yogesh Manikrao Chikatgavkar is particularly memorable, captivating the audience with his powerful high-pitched folk singing that adds authenticity to the production. Bipin Devidas Ghobale complements the lead well, and his portrayal of a Punjabi soldier stands out for the way he delivers a few Marathi lines with a Punjabi accent without making them feel forced or odd.
The production makes effective use of a large set, with common stage elements serving multiple locations instead of relying on constant set changes. The same structures convincingly transform into the mountains of Siachen and the banks of the Chandrabhaga River in Pandharpur, giving the stage a strong visual identity. The lighting is another major strength, with thoughtful use of spotlights, backlighting, and footlights that add depth and elevate several key moments on stage. Ajit Parab's music and Yogesh Manikrao Chikatgavkar's folk compositions further enrich the atmosphere, adding authenticity to both the devotional and dramatic moments.
Overall, MUKKAM POST PANDHARPUR is a one-time watch for its strong audio-visual presentation and devotional journey. With time, the production has the potential to find its own rhythm and grow into a more emotionally fulfilling experience.
