 SWEETY ON THE ROCKS Review

SWEETY ON THE ROCKS is a hilarious farcical dark comedy that turns an ordinary boys' night into a chaotic rollercoaster of misunderstandings. Packed with sharp humour and suspense, the play explores friendship, ego, jealousy, lies, and love through an entertaining narrative.

The play begins when three friends, Abhishek, Vicki, and Shardul, find Sweety unconscious in their apartment late at night. What follows is a suspense-filled investigation into the events leading to her condition, while navigating a tangled web of friendships, attraction, jealousy, lies, and modern relationships. Blending elements of a rom-com with a thriller, the play keeps the audience guessing while delivering laughter.

Amogh Phadke's writing is crisp, witty, and filled with comic situations that feel spontaneous and organic on stage. His direction complements the script's non-linear structure, allowing the story to move fluidly between past and present. The mystery surrounding Sweety's fate gradually unfolds through different perspectives. The humour didn't feel forced and emerged naturally from the characters and their increasingly awkward circumstances.

The performances are one of the play's strongest aspects. Resham Shrivardhankar delivers a convincing performance as Sweety, revealing her character's emotional confusion and unresolved past trauma. Susheel brings infectious energy to Abhishek, a happy-go-lucky man driven by impulse and his desire to marry Sweety. Yash Mavani plays Shardul with sincerity, creating a character who appears almost too good to be true. Aryan Kashyap as Vicki is entertaining as the Bollywood-obsessed playboy with multiple flings. One of them is Simran, played by Malikka Advani, who brings bubbly humour and freshness to the stage, especially in her amusing commentary on contemporary relationship culture.

The production design remains minimal yet imaginative. Pipes are creatively used to suggest windows, lamps, and furniture, while two cloths tied together and their enlarged shadow on the backdrop serve as a symbolic representation of entangled relationships. The flickering lighting transitions between timelines are particularly effective and are best experienced in a theatre setting.

SWEETY ON THE ROCKS by Tpot Productions keeps the audience invested with its mix of humour, suspense, and relatable relationship chaos, making for an entertaining and laughter-filled theatrical experience.
