TAAMBEY KE KEEDEY is an adaptation by Abhinav Grover of a play written originally by Bhuvaneshwar Prasad in pre-Independence era. The play is written with an aim to make the audience think while not having a plot or a story. The intention, to some extent, is to not get confined by rules and established structure. The play is brought together by Punaha Theatre and Abhyaas Theatre.
This adaptation performed at Prithvi Festival as part of the Fringe initiative, is to allow room for new ideas and groups to emerge. To this extent, the selection of the play is the right decision. The actors perform well. All of them are competent as well as prepared. The writing is also done with a lot of care. Performance of plays such as Sarenta by Gagan Dev Riar last year, in the Fringe initiative, sets very lofty standards and though such standards are nearly impossible to meet, one can say that we still have a pass marks play in hand. It serves the purpose of giving many actors and crew a chance to show their talent.
Amongst the actors, the girls in particular stand out. Shimlli Basu and Soumya Zacharia have a good chemistry on display. Use of different ethnic background for various roles also lend actors a distinctive feel.
The writing though done well, could be revisited to include impactful episodes of the contemporary era. Even within the context of causing no political offence, one can highlight a lot more in such a play wherein a scene can travel beyond the plot to show brilliance unhindered by story. The format of the play as stated by the original writer is valid as often writers have to cut down impact due to the story and plot. This strength of the format can be utilized more.
All in all, TAAMBEY KE KEEDEY serves as an adequate play that showcases talent. Apart from that of actors, the director deserves credit for carving out all the characters clearly and keeping the play adequately engaging.
