 YUGANT HINDI Review

A village ruined by nature, the last remains of a family line struggling to hold on, and a distant relative visits their run-down house - this sets the premise of the play YUGANT, directed by Girish Khemani and written by Mahesh Elkunchwar, the last part of the trilogy - the famous Wada Chirebandi (old stone mansion) Trilogy.

It is the end times as nothing much remains of the town, the house, the village, or the people. In the midst of this dreary image, the cousin that had gone to Sweden - Abhay- comes back to the village, and is horrified to see the state of things. Through long conversations and lengthy dialogues, Abhay asks why Parag and Nandini have continued living here and why they have chosen to endure the suffering on a daily basis. The play follows the rage-filled and emotional bantering between the cousins as each explains their perspective and why they chose their respective paths.

Filled with sharp writing that questions the sanity and logic of the decisions of the cousins and their thought processes, and their explanation for their current scenario. The play takes a long, hard look at the monotonous, meaningless nature of life, where we are subject to the wrath of Mother Nature.

The set was minimal, with the raised black platforms covering most of the stage, a small number of brown wooden chairs, and a few long drapes used to cover the chairs. The use of sound and lighting was excellent, specifically the use of wind to convey the dust flying everywhere. The performances from the cast were strong, with each actor holding their own, even with scenes where they have long dialogues and a rollercoaster of emotions to go through.

The play is an experience, where one questions the transient nature of life and the bonds that we hold so dear to us that define our purpose and our goals. It makes us introspect - to truly understand the legacy and the world that we leave behind for our children.
