PRATIK KOTHARIWhich is the last best play you saw and why?

LAAL PENCIL, directed by Manav Kaul. For its choice of subject and its presentation. The coordination among the actors was amazing. The entire team sort of synergized.

Your favourite adda to see a play...

Prithvi and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan at Girgaum, Chowpatty. Both these places just make you feel positive and creative!

Your favourite playwright...

Gulzar saab

Your favourite play-character...

Bujharat Singh as portrayed by Yashpal Sharma in LAKEEREIN (directed by Salim Arif)

A play you would like to see filmed. Why?

TRUTH N DARE. The story has tremendous potential to be a sleek thriller.

A novel/short story you would like to see on stage? Why?

Dhiruben Patel's Gujarati novel 'Pardukhbhanjan Pestonjee'. It has all the elements of a good social comedy and yet makes a meaningful point.

The most hilarious play you have seen...

AME LAI GAYA...TAME RAHI GYA a Gujarati play in which Sharman Joshi played 4 roles and his timing was just brilliant.

A play, which is over-hyped...

Many of the mainstream Gujarati plays

An important play (but ignored):

Saumya Joshi's Gujarati play JO AME BADHA SATHE...TO DUNIYA LAIYE MATHE

A play character you would like to "dialogue" with...

Moshin Abbas Ali urf Mareez...of the Gujarati play MAREEZ. His philosophy is just mind blowing!

A passage from an important play that you can recite...

'Na aav kalpana...vicharo...na khwab ma...ave tu pan na joiye tara jawab ma' from Manoj Shah's MAREEZ... it means neither in imagination, nor in my thoughts or dreams...I don't want even you in place of you!

A classical play that you should have read...

Arthur Miller's DEATH OF A SALESMAN

A play that changed your perception about the theatre....

Salim Arif's LAKEEREIN...lines that altered relationships...This was the first theatre production I was part of. Before this I never knew theatre could have so many formats and dimensions.

How do you regard the Mumbai theatre scene?

Theatre in Mumbai is really happening. There is so much talent around. Especially on the professional platforms. A lot of theatre groups are willing to take the risk of experimenting and are getting the correct exposure at places like Prithvi, the NCPA, Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan. But at the same time a lot of talent goes untapped at the college level. We should learn from cities like Delhi. The orientation of dramatics there in colleges is simply remarkable.

If you have ever been a part of a theatre production/s, can you recall an event that was insightful, significant or simply humorous?

Once during a performance in an intimate theatre, in middle of an intense scene, a member of the audience in the first row farted. Need I say more.

Can you think of a foreign production that you found remarkable? Why?

Complicite's MEASURE FOR MEASURE. I saw it way back in 2005 at Prithvi. I loved it for its overall finesse and performances.

Your favourite director/actor/music or set designer...

Director Huseini Dawawala
Actor- Yashpal Sharma
Music Amod Bhatt
Set Designer Salim Arif

A significant Indian production that you may have witnessed.....

Salim Arif's KHARASHEIN. It is a must watch according to me. Everything about the play, right from Gulzaarsaab's writing to the performances by the likes of Atul Kulkarni, Yashpal Sharma, Lubna Salim to the minimalistic storytelling make this a solid production.
