Dastangoi or the art of story-telling was revived a few years ago and Mahmood Farooqui was at the forefront of popularising this vital form.

A three-day festival of Dastangoi at Prithvi Theatre (July 18-20) has an eclectic selection of fine stories, narrated in the distinctive interactive style. The six peformances include DASTAN MEHTAB, AAZAR JADU KI, DASTAN-E-KARN AZ MAHABHARAT, DASTAN NAYAAB CHOR AUR NAYAAB BHAND KI, DASTAB RAAG DARBARI, DASTAN E JALLIAN and MANTOIYAT.

Farooqui, has, over the years, trained many young Dastangos, so that this lost oral tradtion that is absorbing and entertaining can be carried on. The performers, dressed in white, are seated on white matresses, and transport the listener to a world they can imagine as the words weave their magic
