Embracing the Moment: Naveen Kaushik's Art of Improvisation

For Naveen Kaushik, improvisation goes beyond just a performance technique "it is a fundamental mindset rooted in honesty and presence. His journey with improv began in the vibrant world of Delhi street theatre, where plays often emerged from spontaneous, collective creation. Later, in Mumbai's fast-paced sets, he discovered improvisation to be an essential tool, helping actors stay agile when scripts arrive just hours before shooting.
"Improvisation taught me to truly listen and respond with authenticity," Naveen explains. "You rarely get time to 'perfect' a scene, but you can always be fully present in it."
To Naveen, improvisation isn't about clever one-liners or flashy reactions. It's a quiet, focused attentiveness "to your fellow actors, the space you share, and the unexpected moments that unfold. "When you really listen, your performance comes alive. You're not just performing for someone; you're creating alongside them."
This philosophy forms the core of his upcoming workshops at Act-Atainment, where he will guide actors through the essential principles of improvisation as a powerful performance tool. His goal is to help actors learn to surrender "to the moment, to each other, and to the creative possibilities that open up when the script serves as a launching pad rather than a limitation.
"At the workshop, we'll explore how improvisation sharpens your instincts, deepens your listening, and helps you find genuine expression," Naveen says. "It's about trusting the moment and discovering what emerges from it."
