ASHAD KA EK DIN is a three-act play. In the first part, the young man Kalidas is living a peaceful life in his village situated in the Himalayas and developing his art. There he also has a love affair with a young woman, Mallika. The first turn of the play changes when some courtiers from faraway Ujjaini meet Kalidas and ask him to go to the court of Emperor Chandragupta Vikramaditya. Kalidasa is in a dilemma: on one hand, he has a beautiful, peaceful and loving village life and on the other hand, he has the opportunity to attain greatness by getting patronage from the royal court of Ujjaini. Mallika only wants the man she loves to succeed in life and advises Kalidasa to go to Ujjaini. With a heavy heart, Kalidasa goes to Ujjaini. In the second part of the play, it is revealed that Kalidasa has established his authority in Ujjaini and his fame has spread everywhere. He is married to Priyangumanjari, an attractive and noble lady in Ujjaini itself. Mallika is left unhappy and alone in the village. Kalidasa and Priyangumanjari, accompanied by a retinue of servants, come to Kalidasa's old village. Kalidasa does not go to meet Mallika, but Priyangumanjari does. She sympathizes with Mallika and says that she will make her her friend and get her married to a royal servant. Mallika flatly refuses such help. In the third and final part of the play, Kalidasa arrives alone in the village. Mallika gets the news that Kalidas has been made the governor of Kashmir but he has come back renouncing everything. Helpless Mallika is forced to become a prostitute. And she has a little daughter. Kalidas comes to meet Mallika but, seeing these realities of Mallika's life, goes away completely disappointed. The play ends at this point.
