LOTTERY VASANTHA KRISHNAMURTHY Review

What happens when two kindred souls find friendship and support in each other? That is the plot of the play Lottery, directed by Vasantha Krishnamurthy. Two souls - each feisty and stubborn in their own way, get along perfectly as they share stories and experiences about their lives.

For Pratibha Reddy, who lost her husband early, her only son is receiving dialysis treatment. Going to the park is a way to escape the mundane nature of life. Although her daughter-in-law means well, she would rather do Sudoku and laugh at the people performing exercises at the park. For Bhaskar Rao, whose son and daughter-in-law want to be there for him, he finds comfort in the exercises at the park, hoping to escape the probing questions and get some alone time for himself.

A simple conversation turns into getting breakfast, which also turns into sharing information about their personal life, their marriage, and their perspectives on the world. Pratibha and Bhaskar are two sides of a coin - one bold and fearless, one shy. Yet somehow, their conversations and interactions seem so natural.

The set was minimal, with just a black prop piece, a small bench on the left, and a table with a few chairs on the right. The music was apt and matched the timing of the conversation really well. Even the lighting captured the minute changes, the mood shifts, and the change in scenery very well. All three factors combined enhanced the experience of watching the play.

The performances from the two leads is certainly praiseworthy. Both actors played their roles very well and caught the essence of their characters wonderfully. Their chemistry and banter between the characters were a treat to watch. Performing to a near-full house, the audience roared with laughter and enjoyed every bit of the journey.

It was wonderful to see a play where friendship and companionship among middle-aged individuals were portrayed tastefully. It showed that no matter what age or background, a true friendship will go a long way.
