 THARLAY FOREVER Review

THARLAY FOREVER is a contemporary Marathi stage production directed and produced by Rishi Manohar, featuring Kapil Redekar and Hruta Durgule in lead roles. The play is written by Akshata Acharya, who also appears on stage as a meta-narrator. Backed by Wide Wings Media, the production blends performance, writing, and technical design into a unified theatrical experience.

Abeer Shirish Rajwade, a stand-up comedian, is in the middle of a live performance when Meera Desai Palkar, now a writer based in Los Angeles, suddenly walks back into his life after disappearing for seven years. She needs his consent to complete a film script they once started together. What begins as a formal meeting for co-writing the script slowly turns into a confrontation with their shared past, unresolved emotions, and unanswered questions. A writer on stage also guides the narrative, nudging both characters and the audience to reflect on whether unfinished relationships can ever truly be rewritten.

The performances by Hruta Durgule and Kapil Redekar stand on equal footing, with both actors fully living their characters rather than merely performing them. It's rare to see actors hold the audience's hand and gently walk them through their emotional world, but that connection is strongly felt here. Akshata Acharya, as both the writer of the play and a performer on stage, adds an interesting layer by seamlessly binding the scenes together as a narrator, ensuring the plot flows without feeling forced.

The writer chooses a non-linear narrative and successfully sketches the characters of Abeer and Meera from page to stage. The director has done full justice to the writing by effectively shaping the script into a full-fledged play. Though there is a conscious attempt to give it a screenplay-like treatment, the liveliness of the performances ensures it remains a stage play at heart. The script is strong enough to hold its own even without the LED backdrop, but the technical design and synchronised visuals come as a cherry on top. The LED might have grabbed all the attention if the performances were weak; fortunately, that's not the case here. Instead, the performances bring the backdrop to life rather than letting it dominate. The production has poured its full trust and heart into this project and sprinkled just enough salt for savoury.

Minimal, suggestive props are enough to complement the LED backdrop. The lighting design is beautiful and enhances the overall mood. The audio is synced with the visuals, and even if one is aware of the technical execution, it still works seamlessly, while for those who aren't, it simply feels magical.

The play is purely romantic, with enough twists and turns to keep the audience engaged throughout, even if there is a sense of anticipation about where it might land. A highly recommended watch for breaking the stereotype of the typical Marathi commercial play, it feels almost like a musical opera.

Although it is a rare and well-executed experiment, it should remain an exception rather than becoming a trend, as theatre is a medium rooted in illusion and imagination. This play stands as an exception. It feels almost like the difference between reading a book and listening to an audiobook. But this "audiobook" is designed in a way that does not disturb the core essence of the story. That is why it works. However, such experiments should not become the norm, as theatre must not lose its imaginative space to screen-led formats.
