Theatre Speaks

Sunil Prem Vyas
Actor, Director, Writer
[Hindi Theatre ]
Which is the last best play you saw and why?
A Hindi adaptation of Satres NO EXIT at a suburban venue in Mumbai. The play was performed by an amateur theatre group. Surprisingly the interpretations were so new that it changed a bit of my perception of Satres philosophy. Also the production was unexpectedly very mature & professional in nature. The actors were doctors, housewives & college students by profession.

Your favourite adda to see a play
But Obvious.Prithvi

Your favourite playwright
Elkunchwar, Vijay Tendulkar ( he is bold, truthful as well as interesting), Moliere.

Your favourite play-character
As Writer -
Arjun in MAIN HOON EK BADAL (as if he appeared & guided me what not to
write about him, which I wrote eventually)

As Actor -
Shararti in HUM NAHIN SUDHREINGE ( Its a very catchy character & gains attention of the audience within 2 minutes & remarkably sustains too)-what else can an actor ask for?

As Director -
Dadda in PREM KAHANI by Ratnakar Matkari.

As Spectator -
Diwakar in Vijay Tendulkars GOOD BYE (I can identitify with the character).

A play you would like to see filmed. Why?
There are many plays I would like to see filmed for their quality scripts. But I prefer watching theatre live.

A novel/short story you would like to see on stage? Why?
All stories by Prem Chand. I can identify with all of them. I come from rural India & had been observing his characters. They were all around me. I simply love them. Most of the stories have already been adapted. The rest maybe I will adapt someday.

The most hilarious play you have seen
ALL THE BEST by Devendra Pem (with the original cast of course).

A play, which is over-hyped
A lot many, now a days. (Mostly those with TV stars). I think I too should learn these marketing skills of promoting ones self.

An important play (but ignored):
IPTAs KURUKSHETRA SE KARGIL TAK by M.S. Sathyu.

A play character you would like to dialogue with
Ganpatrao Belwalkar (Appa) from NATASAMRAT by V.V. Shirwadkar.
Vidyut -from my forthcoming play LAL MITTI.

A passage from an important play that you can recite
All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages.
As you like it-by Shakespeare

You are right! Star nahin Artist hoon, ajeeb-o-gareeb,
Ajeeb bhiaur gareeb bhi,

-from my script THE ARTIST.

A classical play that you should have read
ABHIGYAN SHAKUNTALAM in Sanskrit.

A play that changed your perception about the theatre
Every next play I work on changes my perception a bit. It is as if the theatre that exists in my innermost self is giving me a mixed response.

How do you regard the Mumbai theatre scene?
It is happening & is growing with so many new theatre groups & enthusiasts. But we still need to transform many auditoriums to cater to the needs of theatre people.

Have you read any interesting books/articles concerning the theatre? Why did you find them interesting?
Re-Read Towards a Poor Theatre" by Grotowski. Its always interesting to read about the theatre, which is my passion.

If you have ever been a part of a theatre production/s, can you recall an event that was insightful, significant or simply humorous?
I recall an instance where one of the actors in our group was performing an intense scene. He was supposed to be very angry and had to appear as if he had no control on his senses. Well he actually went out of control in the true sense of the word, fell on one of the walls of our set and the entire thing collapsed. The whole scene suddenly became funny. We laughed for about 4-5 minutes along with the audience & performed the rest of the play (15 mintues) on the broken set. Fortunately no body was injured.

Can you think of a foreign production that you found remarkable? Why?
Unfortunately I havent seen many.

Your favourite director/actor/music or set designer
Director -
Could have commented if had observed on rehearsal floors-finally theatre is an actors medium.

Actor-
A lot manybut wish to mention Anurag Kashyap saw him in Maks SIR SIR SARLA. He is Brilliant.

Music-
Kuldeep Singh in IPTAs BALI and Anks JIS LAHORE NAHIN DEKHYA

Set-
All the suggestive sets of Makrands plays. I appreciate his innovative and creative set and light design.

A significant Indian production that you may have witnessed
GHASIRAM KOTWAL with the original cast.

Life in the theatre without the humble batata-wada or the cutting chai or if you please brownies that are snuggling chocolate bits or can you recall the best gastronomic experience youve had in the precincts of the theatre to date?
Cutting chai during rehearsals is my favourite. Once in a month, a pot lunch at Sunday rehearsals (we plan it that way).

I also remember my last production WAH BHAI WAH (Hindi Adaptation of Molieres The PHYSICIAN IN SPITE OF HIMSELF). We had weekend day-night rehearsals at a bungalow in Manori beach. All the ladies in the group cooked for the team.
