 The �TheatreSpeak� section of our website is open to one and all who may be interested in exchanging their views and opinions about the theatre. There is a sample list of questions and statements given below that should help you make your own �Speak�. The list is merely indicative of what we�d like people to think and write about the theatre. Feel free to answer as you please.
You may choose to send in your �Speak� in a question-answer format or in a paragraph/s. Again it is not necessary that you frame answers to all that we have asked. You may choose to dwell on only one or a couple of points if you like. We also take this opportunity to thank Ramu, a well-wisher, a dear friend and a committed theatre person for his cerebral and moral support and also for adding zing to the volley of questions provided below.
1. What is your opinion about theatre as an art form?
To me theatre is one of the most exciting forms of performance art. It�s not just the live element that�s attractive, but also the theatricality, the possibilities of creating illusions in time and space.
2. Which is the last best play you saw and why?
I think it was Shakkar Ke Panch Daane � unfortunately I havent seen a lot of the new theatre being done in Marathi recently, but I�m told some of it is very, very good. I liked Shakkar because of its rich text, imagery, and of course the wonderful performance by Kumud Mishra.
3. Your favourite adda to see a play�
I would have to say Prithvi � but I enjoy the Horniman Circle garden too.
4. Your favourite playwright�
I�ve worked with texts written by some of our best, and my most favourite writers � Mrozek, Elkunchwar, Pinter, Tendulkar, Dubey, Rajeev Naik, Shafat Khan, Kundera, and now Ramu Ramnathan, long over due !
5. Your favourite play-character�
The meek girl from Khel Khel Main � who finds herself, and pays a terrible price. She was played brilliantly by Divya Jagdale � also the girl next door in Vaikom Basheer�s �Me Grandad �ad an Elephant � played by Karishma ! and of course, Saru from Tendulkar�s Panchi �
6. A novel/short story you would like to see on stage? Why?
I am keen on doing Oriana Fallaci�s Letter to a Child Unborn as a theatre piece. It has tremendous possibilities in staging, and also as a performance piece for an actor.
7. The most hilarious play you have seen�
Recently it would have to be Sahi Re Sahi �!
8. A classical play that you should have read�
I don�t think I have read enough of the Greek classics �that�s something I regret � and it would be good to read some of our classics, or even hear them, in the original. Most of the translations in English are archaic.
9. A play that changed your perception about the theatre�
Hayavadana by Girish Karnad � the version directed by Satyadev Dubey. I knew in that instant that had to be part of the theatre. In any capacity, in any role.
10. Have you read any interesting books/articles concerning the theatre? Why did you find them interesting?
Well, I used to find Rustom Bharucha�s writings very stimulating � and Shanta�s book on Marathi theatre is very interesting, especially the long interviews with �younger� playwrights � PT Notes always has something of interest to read, and sometimes one wishes it had more space. Some years ago Dubey had done a series of articles, very personal, on theatre people he knew well, and they were fascinating.
11. If you have ever been a part of a theatre production/s, can you recall an event that was insightful, significant or simply humorous?
I think the most remarkable moment in the theatre is when a play is performed for the first time before an audience � !
