The Meisner acting technique, developed by Sanford Meisner, is an approach that emphasizes truthful, instinctive behavior and emotional connection in acting. It contrasts with "Method acting" by focusing on external stimuli and the dynamic interplay between actors rather than internal emotional recall.
Key aspects of the Meisner technique include:
Emotional Preparation:
Actors use personal experiences or imagination to access a character's emotional state, but this is used to spark the first moment of a scene, not to sustain it.
Repetition Exercises:
Actors repeat phrases back and forth, focusing on their partner's behavior and emotions to develop observation skills and authentic reactions.
Independent Activity:
Actors engage in activities that require focus and attention, leading them to react authentically to their environment and fellow actors.
Living in the Moment:
The technique encourages actors to be present and responsive to the immediate circumstances of the scene, rather than relying on pre-planned actions or overly thought-out interpretations.
Emphasis on Instinct:
Meisner believed that talent comes from instinct, and his technique aims to free actors from overthinking and allow for spontaneous, truthful responses.
In essence, the Meisner technique trains actors to:
Be fully present and engaged in the scene.
React genuinely to their scene partners and environment.
Develop a heightened sense of observation and responsiveness.
Find emotional truth in their performance through interaction and impulse.
