The Physical Actor
The body has extraordinary capacity, especially once organised and trained. It is always with others, both performers and spectators, always in motion and in space. And so performance begins, starting from the physical actor.
We will progress from training in voice and body exercises and then explore how group exercises can lead to physical and vocal action in a given space. We will work with key principles including alignment, grounding, 360-degree awareness, release, impulse and resonance. Participants will then start to work with texts and finally create short performance etudes.
Two lecture/screenings and group discussions will place the practice in a context of Polish and contemporary European and Asian theatre, examining the implications of key terms such as via negativa and animal energy, drawing on the work of Jerzy Grotowski, Tadashi Suzuki, Gardzienice and other directors and companies, including British Physical Theatre.
Students will need to learn off by heart in advance a short 1-minute soliloquy in their mother tongue (or English if confident enough) which they can use in the training. This should be from a classical text- play, story or poem - and have a poetic rather than domestic or daily dimension.
Theatre Workshop Fees :
USD 300 / Rs. 15,000 (subsidized for Indian studen)
