The Two Perspectives: (The Theatre Company, The actors) They sit in oblivion. Who is going to be the sacrificial lamb this time? Watch the play carefully. Dont miss a thing. Tomorrow, you will write about us. They better be nice words. But how does it matter? So that your opinion can be added to our resumes, and then we can flaunt them proudly. How do a few opiniated comments matter? But no one can mask the dread. Yes, we love the critics as much as we hate them. For a lot of people, it is important that their play be written about. Splashed across all newspapers, they are not ashamed to show you the numerous clippings at the slightest hint of appraisal. But contradictory as it may sound, it is a good thing. After all that hard work and months of practice, it is worth every bit of it. There is no personal attack on anyone. But one last thing, just because you are a critic, it does not excuse you from buying a ticket! Kindly remember that please!
The Critic: I am a critic. A wanna be writer. I like to write about things. Not anything particularly. But just something vague. But in this instance, I know my job. I come to watch a play and every one should appreciate that. My presence makes your play worthy. I expect the free tickets. Dont look at me skeptically. I am here to judge. I do not know who gives me that power, but here I am. I pay more attention to myself and even lesser to the play. The very word should make you alert. It should make you take notice of me. Tomorrow, your play will get its publicity. I will throw in a few words. I will make it sound like an enjoyable evening. This is not to say that all plays are boring! But sometimes, you do have to watch slapstick comedies and god! How you wish you could shake the audience for laughing at those double-meaning jokes tucked between practiced lines. Sometimes I do take notice of the play. It may be the sheer subtlety with which the meaning is conveyed or it may be the power packed performance by actors. At the end of the day, I just do my job.
And to contradict everything I say, I am here only because your play deserves the best. I should take notice of you and not you of me. Maybe what I say will matter at some point, and maybe you incorporate that in your play. And yes, Thank you for an enjoyable evening. As for the free ticket, I think I deserve that. My job should be made a little easier. After all, I do deserve some credit for contributing to your play since I give the finishing touch to your creation. You put your entire dream in front of me. Maybe I will like it, maybe I wont. But your dream is still your dream. Sometimes its all youve got.
