Synopsis

Surnai Theatre and Folk Arts Foundation with Mumbai Theatre Guide, presents "Swadheenta, Ek Mahotsav", a celebration of India's independence movement.

Swatantrata, Freedom, the word itself has a joyous sound. For today's generation it is just a word, with stories woven around it by their parents and grandparents. There are very few survivors of the generation that actually has memories of India's fight for freedom. We at Surnai, as actors and performers will try to bring alive some of the words and thoughts of a few Swatantrata senanis, the soldiers of the movement, who gave their lives and their very beings to fight for the freedom of their country from British rule.

We believe that Independence Day belongs to each one of us, and we will celebrate it like any Indian festival- Holi, Diwali, Rakshabandhan, with colour, passion and a spirit of brotherhood, a new approach, ek nayi soch.

The pen is mightier than the sword, and the pen can bring about a revolution. Gandhi's non-violent approach succeeded because of the words of inspiration penned or spoken by various leaders. Actors too use language and words to create an atmosphere.

So during this lockdown, when action is limited, let us celebrate the infinite and unlimited world of words and thoughts that culminated in the independence of India.

With Ila Arun as the sutradhar, we will weave a fabric of stories, improvisations, poems and speeches to bring you snippets of the Freedom movement.
