Every film-maker wants to tell a story that has import for her, but what happens when that story is socially uncomfortable, tacitly suppressed or even seen as taboo?

Aparna Sen and Konkona Sen have both started their careers as actresses and moved on to direct films as well. With films like 36 Chowringhee Lane, Paroma, Mr & Mrs Iyer, 15 Park Avenue and so many more, Aparna Sen brought to audiences themes and viewpoints that were rarely shared on screen. There was a point of view that was refreshing, challenging and provoking, demanding that we, her audiences, consider loneliness, old age, mental illness, female sexuality and desire, the many faces and expressions of love, humanity in the face of communalism, and so on. Her latest film Sonata continues this trend.

Growing up with her mother, in this world, and then going on to act in a number of films directed by her, Konkona shares this desire to tell the untold story, make visible the unspoken or often deliberately ignored experiences. This is apparent through the characters she plays in films, and in her transition to director with A Death in the Gunj.

In this Mumbai Local, Aparna Sen and Konkona Sen Sharma will discuss what it means to tell the story you feel must be told. What does it demand of them as people, as artists? When they know a film is bound to elicit a reaction, what do they do? In their film-making and around it? And do they see any change in the openness of the environment to dealing with socially uncomfortable topics - from the time Aparna Sen started making films to now as Konkona’s film has just released.

You can look forward to a heady conversation, peppered with film clips, around speaking out, speaking up, and not speaking - and the world we create as we make each choice.
