As news of Girish Karnad's demise pours in, it is only with a heavy heart we write about the passing on of a stellar playwright.

Regarded as one of the modernists of Indian playwriting, Girish Karnad was also an internationally acclaimed Indian playwright. His plays like HAYAVADANA and NAGAMANDALA brought a new and different consciousness to Indian playwriting which was steeped in our folklore but modern at the same time. He went on to write other plays.

Girish Karnad had a career in Kannada and Hindi cinema as well. Apart from acting in films, he had been the director of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). He was also the recipient of various prestigious awards.

He had been ill for a while. He passed away at his residence in Bangalore.

His name will continue to stay on in the annals of Indian theatre.
