Vijay Mohan Crishna, who passed away on March 4, 2026, at the age of 81, was a man who comfortably inhabited two seemingly disparate worlds - the corporate boardroom and the stage - with equal authority and dedication.
For several years, he was a pillar of the Indian theatre, best known for his portrayal of Jairaj in Mahesh Dattani's Dance Like a Man, directed by Lillete Dubey.
Beyond his iconic 25-year run in this play, Crishna was a versatile actor and occasional director who helped shape the English theatre scene in Mumbai and Delhi, as well as handpicking some good film roles.
Crishna's commitment to the stage was not a hobby but a lifelong vocation that spanned over six decades. His journey began in 1965 on the Delhi stage. During his years in Delhi and later Kolkata, he cut his teeth on the classics. He was a contemporary of figures like Amitabh Bachchan in the amateur theatre circles of Delhi before moving to Mumbai in 1971.
Once in Mumbai, he became a core member of the city's vibrant theatre scene, collaborating mainly with Pearl and Alyque Padamsee. Some of his most notable stage work included, Macbeth, Othello, Othello, Death of a Salesman, Orphans among others.
MTG conveys heartfelt condolences to his family and the theatre community.
