The Roopvedh Pratisthan awards 2006 go to playwrights Vijay Tendulkar and Ramu Ramanathan
Established in 2004, Roopvedh Pratisthan is a trust which supports and recognizes meaningful and significant contributions to Indian theatre. Since its inception it has bestowed two awards each year. The Tanveer Sanmaan award goes to a senior person who has contributed significantly to Indian Theatre. Through this award, Roopvedh Pratishtan hopes to underline the awardee's contribution and create awareness amongst the present generation.
The Tanveer Abhyaasvrutti is a fellowship, given to a younger person who is making a significant contribution in theatre, today. In the first year, the Sanmaan was awarded to Ebrahim Alkazi. In 2005 the Sanmaan was awarded to Bhalchandra Pendharkar and the Abhyaasvrutti to Chetan Datar.
On 9th December 2006 playwright Vijay Tendulkar was felicitated with the Tanveer Sanmaan at a function held at the Chavan Natyagriha in Pune. Tendulkar barely needs an introduction. Post the fifties he along with Girish Karnad and Badal Sircar redefined the Indian theatre scene. A prolific writer, Tendulkars plays beautifully captured the social milieu of his time and it is no wonder that even today many young theatre people seem keen to do his plays.
The trusts Tanveer Abhyaasvrutti was presented to playwright Ramu Ramanathan. Plays like MAHADEVBHAI (1894-1942) and COTTON 56, POLYESTER 84 make Ramu Ramanathan one of the very few playwrights in the country to address contemporary issues. His plays are not only telling of our times but are also theatrically commendable pieces.
Filmmaker Shyam Benegal presided over the function in Pune. Theatre directors, Waman Kendre and Atul Pethe, along with poet, Ashok Bajpayee spoke about Tendulkar's body of work while Sunil Shanbag discussed Ramu Ramanathans oeuvre.
