It's one of those exciting times of the year at the Drama School Mumbai (DSM) as its students are readying to put up their annual production. This year the students have taken inspiration from Shakespeare's evergreen classic ROMEO AND JULIET to stage their own version titled JULIET AUR USKA ROMEO. The timing could not be more appropriate as Valentine Day approaches.

The production is a re-telling of the original story of the star-crossed lovers, and focuses instead on Juliet and her strong love for Romeo.

The Hindi translation has been done by Amitabh Srivastava and the production has been directed by Aniruddha Khutwad.

Jehan Manekshaw, one of the founders and directors of the Drama School Mumbai (DSM) talks about how the school has evolved and about the production this year.

He says: ''The Drama School, Mumbai has evolved dramatically over the last three years. When we started out with the curriculum and the production in the first year, it was a concept on paper, brought to life for the first time. The faculty has taken the learning that came from each batch through the programme and made major improvements in each of the teaching strands. The team who sat around the table in the first year to design the entire curriculum have grown with the school in experience and learning, and slowly a vocabulary for the school is beginning to emerge with clear learning trajectories for the students.

In all of this, the production has also moved from - what in the first year, seemed a grand affair - to a much more integrated part of the entire learning journey of the programme. With the focus centered on applying the learning of theatre making and performance, to a full length play, the production directed by Aniruddha itself is now a stepping stone in the theatre making experiences the students have, towards their own, self-directed projects at the end of the academic year.

JULIET AUR USKA ROMEO will be staged during the Valentine Day's weekend:
12th, 13th and 14th February at 7 pm at the Marathi Sahitya Sangh auditorium, Girgaum, Mumbai.
