David Barratt-Due Playing Edvard Grieg's compositions

On 25th November 2019, the Royal Norwegian Consulate General in Mumbai organised a programme at G5A, inviting author Ivo de Figueiredo, translator Astri Ghosh and theatre director Ila Arun. The occasion was to launch Ivo de Figueiredo's book: Henrik Ibsen: The Man and the Mask.

Author Jerry Pinto was invited to converse with Ivo de Figueiredo and Astri Ghosh. The conversation was shaped around Figueiredo's book; of what makes this work different from other biographies of Ibsen and about Figueiredo's approach to the famous Norwegian playwright's life and work. Jerry Pinto spoke to Astri Ghosh about translating Ibsen into Hindi and what were the challenges she faced.

Later, Ila Arun spoke about her interpretation of Ibsen’s plays, starting with her production MARICHIKA (LADY FROM THE SEA) to introducing her adaptation of HEDDA GABLER, which will open in mid January 2020. A scene from the play was staged as well.

From Left to Right: Astri Ghosh, Jerry Pinto, Ivo de Figueiredo, Ann Ollestad (The Consul General) and Ila Arun.

In attendance in the audience was actress Lillete Dubey, also mother to actress Ira Dubey who is playing Hedda (as Harpreet Kaur Gill) in Ila Arun's production.

One of the best highlights of the evening were the opening and closing selections from the great Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg's repertoire, played on piano by the young David Barratt-Due who is interning with the Consulate. He comes from a family of well-known musicians in Norway. The young musician also spoke of the special relationship that Henrik Ibsen shared with Edvard Grieg, whom he later commissioned to compose for his play PEER GYNT.

Ivo de Figueiredo's book Henrik Ibsen: The Man and the Mask is available at the bookstore Kitab Khana in Mumbai and can also be ordered from Amazon India
