Known to a wide audience for his memorable turn as JK in The Family Man, Sharib Hashmi has steadily carved a space for himself as one of the most sensitive and versatile actors of his generation. Polite, humble, deeply empathetic, and blessed with an effortless sense of humour, Hashmi seamlessly moves between cinema, web series, and theatre, bringing emotional honesty and creative courage to every performance.
At the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival 2026, Sharib Hashmi returns to the theatre stage with BREAST OF LUCK, a musical comedy that is as moving as it is unconventional. In a candid video interview with Mumbai Theatre Guide, conducted by Ravi Mishra, Hashmi spoke about the journey behind the play and his own transition from the comfort of screen acting to the raw immediacy of live theatre.
Arun, a stockbroker, and Sheila, a classical singer, clash as neighbours but unknowingly fall in love after matching on a dating app. When Arun learns Sheila has stage-IV breast cancer, love, music, humour, and resilience bind them beyond appearances.
In the interview, Hashmi reflected on his journey from cinema to theatre, sharing how stepping away from the comfort of retakes into live performance demanded discipline, vulnerability, and hard work. Choosing the musical comedy genre was a conscious effort to let humour and music soften difficult truths without diminishing their impact.
He spoke about the importance of opposite-behaving characters in the play, explaining how contrast fuels both conflict and connection. While the play is not directly inspired by real-life events, its emotional core resonates with authenticity. Hashmi also praised director Lina Yadav, describing her as intuitive, emotionally grounded, and creatively fearless.
Concluding the interaction, Hashmi invited audiences to experience a story that celebrates love beyond appearances, fear, and loss. Distinct from his popular character JK Talpade, this role allows him to explore vulnerability, romance, and quiet strength, reaffirming his belief in theatre as a space for honest and courageous storytelling.
