The Dramatic Arts and Design Academy (DADA) in Delhi will host a theatre festival under the auspices of the Royal Norwegian Embassy to present the richness and diversity of the work of Henrik Ibsen and the varied manifestations of his text performed by international theatre groups.
About the Festival:
As the Delhi Ibsen Festival enters its 5th year, some new initiatives bring together possibilities for international collaboration between theatre directors from abroad, and actors, designers and technicians from India.
The festival will take place in Delhi from December 1st-7th. It brings to the city a wide range of productions, which represent many new trends in theatre internationally. Sometimes these are very experimental, while at other times, the productions become windows to how different cultures, be it Asian, African or European, have adapted Ibsen into their own cultural ethos and milieu.
This year, a new element has been introduced to the Ibsen Festival. International directors have been invited to work on Ibsen productions with Indian theatre companies. Wlodzimierz Staniewski from Poland directs THE MASTER BUILDER with the Kolkata based group, Padatik. Other productions are from Norway, Uzbekistan and Pakistan, and will include THE LADY FROM THE SEA, GHOSTS and A DOLL'S HOUSE.
Younger directors from Manipur and Kerala showcase an interesting confrontation between Ibsen and the influence of the existing traditions in their cultures. Heisnam Tomba from Manipur and Sankar Venkateshwaran from Kerala are doing specially commissioned productions of Ibsen. They include, WHEN WE DEAD AWAKEN, and AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE. Shubham Bhatia of Ramjas College in Delhi adapts Ibsen's LEAGUE OF YOUTH to a rural scenario in JAI JAWAAN PARTY. The festival promises to present an excellent cross section of very different 'Ibsens'.
The festival seminar this year takes off from Ibsen's AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE and is titled 'Who is the Enemy?'
Festival Dates: December 1-7 2012.
Venues: Kamani auditorium, LTG auditorium (for the plays) and India International Centre (for the seminar).
