After a battle against cancer over the last few months, Padma Irani, who was given the honorific title "Rani" passed away at the Wockhardt Hospital at Bombay Central, Mumbai, on 25th January 2016.

Although born in a Maharashtrain family, Padma Rani made her career in Gujarati theatre and film, much like her younger sister, the veteran actress Sarita Joshi who followed suit.

Padma Rani became well versed in Gujarati after her marriage to Namdar Irani, who was an influential Parsi of considerable wealth in his time. Namdar Irani also produced and directed plays.

Over her long career on the Gujarati stage spanning many, many plays and thousands of shows, Padma Rani became a particular success after her role as Baa in the hugely popular Gujarati play BAA RETIRE THAAY CHHE, based on the original Marathi play AAEE RETIRE HOTA by playwright Ashok Patole.

The play brought Padma Rani a lot of fame. Right till the end of her career she continued to work mostly in motherly roles, and became a household name on the Gujarati stage. She did several plays with producer-actor Arvind Rathod who remained her close friend and confidante.

She is survived by her daughter Daisy Irani and her family.
