Nehru Centre Presents the 27th Theatre Festival -
Six Plays, Five Languages, One Stage

Nehru Centre, Mumbai, long recognized as one of the city's most steadfast champions of the performing arts, is set to host its 27th Theatre Festival from 15th to 20th September 2025. This year's edition will feature six acclaimed plays in Marathi, Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, and English, showcasing the diversity and depth of Indian theatre.

The festival opens on Monday, 15th September with the Marathi play CHANAKYA, followed by the Hindi drama MAITYABURJ on Tuesday, 16th September. On Wednesday, 17th September, audiences can experience the Urdu production GUDAMBA, while Thursday, 18th September brings the Gujarati play GAMTA MANGAMTA. The English play SALAAM NONI APPA takes the stage on Friday, 19th September, and the festival concludes on Saturday, 20th September with the Marathi musical SANGEET ANANDMATH. All performances begin at 7:00 pm.

Since its inception in 1997, the Nehru Centre Theatre Festival has grown into a premier cultural event, having presented over 309 plays across 24 years. The selection process prioritizes quality, variety, and linguistic diversity, often including theatre forms from across India. The festival has hosted works in Assamese, Bengali, Chhattisgarhi, Kannada, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Mewari, and more - alongside the enduring pillars of Hindustani and English theatre.

Notable past participants include Habib Tanvir’s groundbreaking Chhattisgarhi productions, K.N. Panikar's Sanskrit works, Satish Alekar, Bansi Kaul, the late B.V. Karanth, Usha Ganguli, Waman Kendre, IPTA, and Nadira Babbar, among others.

The 27th edition promises a rich theatrical journey for Mumbai audiences - a rare opportunity to witness performances that blend linguistic variety, cultural heritage, and contemporary relevance, all within one unforgettable week.
