The vibrant essence of Marathi theatre comes alive once again as the NCPA's Pratibimb Marathi Natya Utsav returns this summer. Designed to inspire, encourage, and support Marathi storytelling, the five-day festival promises an engaging mix of performances, discussions, and creative showcases.
This year's lineup brings together a rich blend of experimental, contemporary, and popular theatre. The festival opens with BARAD, an experimental play written and directed by Sunil Dongre, followed by NORMAL DAY WITH DANNY PANDIT, a comedy directed by Raj Apte at Tata Theatre.
Audiences can also experience ARE SANSAR SANSAR, a musical presentation directed by Narayan Bapodkar, and LAGN PANCHAMI, a comedic play written by Madhusudan Kalelkar and directed by Nipun Dharmadhikari. Adding to the variety is MAG TU MALA KA, another experimental performance helmed by Nipun Dharmadhikari, and KARUNAGATKE, written and directed by Prajakta Deshpande.
One of the highlights is PAGE TO STAGE, an experimental presentation featuring Ashish Mhatre and others, offering a deep dive into Marathi literature and its theatrical adaptations.
Beyond plays, the festival also includes interactive sessions such as KALPANA TE MANCH - LEKHAN SATRA, a writing workshop conducted by Prajakta Deshpande, and SHARIRBHAAN ANI JAANIV, a body movement workshop led by Prajakta Deshpande at the JBT Museum. Poetry and music enthusiasts can look forward to KAVITANCHYA PAN LIVE, curated and directed by Madhuri Gokhale.
True to its name, 'Pratibimb' meaning reflection, the festival showcases the depth and diversity of Maharashtra’s theatrical heritage. It offers a platform for both established artists and emerging talent, presenting stories that are thought-provoking and rooted in cultural richness.
Presented by the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), the festival is a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and storytelling. Theatre lovers can expect an immersive experience that highlights the evolving landscape of Marathi theatre while honouring its strong traditions.
