Indian theatre audiences are set to witness an extraordinary stage production as INT Aditya Birla Centre for Performing Arts presents ZEN KATHA-a sweeping tale that blends history, philosophy, and high-energy performance into a compelling theatrical experience.
Written by the acclaimed storyteller Partap Sharma and directed by the renowned theatre personality Lillete Dubey, ZEN KATHA traces the remarkable journey of Bodhidharma. Born a fragile Pallava prince in 5th-century India and abandoned at birth, he rises to become the 28th Patriarch of Buddhism, shaping one of the world's most influential spiritual traditions.
The play unfolds across vast geographies-from the ancient city of Kanchipuram to imperial China—bringing to life Bodhidharma's encounters with gurus, monks, warriors, and rulers. A highlight of the narrative is his legendary exchange with Emperor Wu Ti of the Liang dynasty, a moment that captures the essence of Zen philosophy.
What sets ZEN KATHA apart is its dynamic staging. The production seamlessly weaves together theatre, martial arts, romance, and humour, supported by striking visuals and a powerful ensemble cast. The integration of martial arts, choreographed by Lars Kjeldsen, adds authenticity and intensity, reflecting Bodhidharma's enduring influence on disciplines like Kung Fu and Tai Chi.
With original music by Mahesh Tinaikar, evocative set and lighting design by Salim Akhtar, and costumes by Pallavi Patel, the production promises a rich sensory experience.
More than just a historical retelling, ZEN KATHA is a story of transformation—of identity, purpose, and inner awakening-making it a must-watch for Indian theatre lovers seeking both depth and spectacle.
