Indian theatre has been left poorer with the passing of Ratan Thiyam, following a prolonged illness, at the age of 77.
Manipur born Thiyam graduated from the National School of Drama in 1970 and returned to his roots to set up the Chorus Repertory Theatre in Imphal in 1976.
The playwright and director was known to combine traditional performing forms with contemporary content to create stunning works of theatre that transcended language. Plays like KARNABHARAM, URUBHANGAM, UTTAR PRIYADARSHI, RITUSAMHARAM and THE MANIPUR TRILOGY transformed the landscape of Indian theatre.
He was vice-chairperson of Sangeet Natak Akademi, chairman of NSD and later its director. He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Direction in 1987, and the Padma Shri in 1989. He was awarded the 2012 Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 2012, among the many national and international honors.
