"After two years of repeated efforts, we are delighted to bring Complicite's brilliant play A DISAPPEARING NUMBER TO INDIA", said Prithvi Theatre's Sanjana Kapoor at the recently concluded press meet on 15th July. Sameera Iyengar and Sanjana Kapoor at Prithvi Theatre have been tirelessly working towards inviting this mammoth and magical production to India. One of the primary reasons is that the play speaks about the collaboration between our very own genius Srinivas Ramanujan and his mentor GH Hardy.
The Play which is partly inspired by GH Hardy's A Mathematician's Apology works at two levels. One is the content which speaks not only about the Ramanujan-Hardy connection but goes beyond that to talk about the String Theory and the patterns which string people together across time and space. The second interesting thing is the play's presentation and structure. The technology used to tell the story has fascinated one and all that have seen this play. The production has won the company several awards like The Evening Standard Award for the Best Play, the Laurence Olivier award for the best new play and many more. The play runs for two hours without an intermission or a blackout, and there are constant transitions that take place on stage. The play uses shadows, projections, constantly transforming sets and other devices which creates a magical impact. Directed by Simon McBurney, this 2007 production is considered a masterpiece of modern Theatre. The music for this production has been designed by Indian-British Musician Nitin Sawhwey.
The group which arrives in India in the 1st week of August 2010 is getting its own software technology to support the intricate technical nuances. The play will be showcased at the NCPA's Jamshed Baba Theatre and later in Hyderabad during the International congress of Mathematicians. The scale of this play can be judged from the fact that there are more that fifteen groups sponsoring it.
Prithvi Theatre has gone all out for the promotion of this play. There are several events organized as a build up to the main event. There is a Mathematics Month going on at Prithvi where there are readings, performances and films being shown on the History of Mathematics and its connections with Literature. There is the Hive Mind Project which brings together school teachers and students to create a human beehive in a spectacular theatrical performance followed by a Maths Mela at several venues throughout the city. It's a busy month for the Prithviwallahs as this is one play which requires as much audience preparation as does hosting the shows. The build up to this play is brilliantly organized and the information iks up to date. The play has some amazing credentials that speak for its quality. What more can theatre buffs ask for?
