Redefining the landscape of experimental and commercial Marathi theatre, the acclaimed cultural organization Astitva, proudly sponsored by Soft Corner, has officially announced the launch of 'Kathahotra 2026'. With its meticulous event curation powered by "Curated Classics", this pioneering state-level one-act play competition invites theatre practitioners to partake in a unique theatrical Yagna (sacred fire)-the transformation of 41 unrepresented Indian and International literary masterpieces into vibrant Marathi stage adaptations.
Setting a new benchmark for artistic integrity, Kathahotra is not merely a competition but a cultural metamorphosis. It abandons traditional theatrical constraints to foster a space of absolute creative liberation and meritocracy.
The Unique Concept and "Curated Classics" Integration
Powered by the literary expertise of Curated Classics, the event features an exclusive 'Story Bank' comprising 41 brilliant, globally sourced stories. Participating teams are required to adapt and perform exactly two distinct one-act plays: one based on an Indian story and one on an International story.
• No Duplication: To ensure audiences witness a diverse spectrum of art, no two teams are permitted to perform the same story. • Absolute Freedom: Breaking conventional competition rules, Kathahotra imposes zero restrictions on multi-participation. A director, writer, actor, or technician is completely free to participate in multiple plays and collaborate with different groups. • Creative Support: To aid the adaptation process, organizers will provide participating teams with a comprehensive dossier containing the original stories, certified Marathi translations, synopses, and a probable adaptation structure.
Eligibility and Registration
Participation is open to commercial, experimental, amateur, and novice theatre groups, provided that all participating performing artists possess a minimum of three years of stage experience.
• Registration Process: There are no printed entry forms. Registration is strictly limited to a maximum of 20 groups on a first-come, first-serve basis.
• Date & Time: Saturday, 15th August 2026 | 05:00 PM to 07:00 PM.
• Draw of Lots & Story Allocation: Following registration, the story selection via a transparent lottery system and performance slot allocation will take place between 07:00 PM and 09:00 PM at the same venue. Teams are allowed a one-time "shuffle" to mutually exchange allocated stories with other groups.
Entry Fee & The 100% Ticket Refund Policy
The entry fee is ₹2,000/-. In an unprecedented move, Kathahotra guarantees a refund of this fee in the form of equivalent Grand Finale audience tickets (valued at ₹200 each), distributed in three tiers based on the round of elimination:
• Teams eliminated in Pre-Elimination: Receive 3 tickets (₹600 value). • Teams eliminated in the Elimination Round: Receive 6 tickets (₹1,200 value). • Finalist Teams: Receive 10 tickets (₹2,000 value - full refund).
The Three-Tiered Competition Schedule
1. Pre-Elimination (Narration & Discussion Round) • Date: Sunday, 16th August 2026 | 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM • Venue: Parishad Kaksh, Ground Floor, Yashwant Natya Mandir. • Format: Teams will be allotted 10 minutes per story to present their directorial vision, conceptual foundation, and adaptation roadmap to the jury.
2. Elimination Round (Rehearsal Format) • Dates: Saturday & Sunday, 29th & 30th August 2026 | 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM • Venue: C-Hall, Ground Floor, Yashwant Natya Mandir. • Format: The top 10 shortlisted groups (presenting 20 plays) will perform their adaptations in a raw, rehearsal-style format. Note: A "Story Takeover" policy allows advancing teams to adopt exceptional stories left behind by eliminated groups based purely on merit.
3. Grand Finale (Full Stage Presentation) • Date: Saturday, 12th September 2026 | 10:00 AM onwards • Venue: Main Auditorium, Yashwant Natya Mandir. • Format: The top 5 elite groups will perform 10 back-to-back plays (5 Indian, 5 International) with full technical execution.
Awards: The "Only Winners" Philosophy
Kathahotra firmly believes that artistic excellence cannot be graded into second or third places. Therefore, the competition has eradicated runner-up positions, honoring only the absolute best across various categories with a total prize pool of ₹1,10,000/-:
• Maha-Natya Samman (Best Play): ₹40,000 for Best Indian Story Adaptation & ₹40,000 for Best International Story Adaptation. • Individual Honors: Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded exclusively to the single best performer in Directing (Natya-Sutradhar), Writing/Adaptation (Shabda-Shilpakar), Acting (Ranga-Brahma for Lead and Supporting), and Technical Design (Drushya-Shravya Avishkar for Music, Lights, and Sets) across both Indian and International categories.
