Play Reading Club by Gillo Theatre Repertory and Bright Sparks...This Weekend: Playwright Ratnakar Matkari In Focus...

Gillo Foundation and Bright Sparks are happy to announce the fifth session of "KATHASAGAR", a multi-lingual reading club for children, young adults, artists and parents, with a focus on literature for children, especially plays for children. The aim is to create a space that celebrates reading as a group, reading as a community. This platform provides an opportunity for adults and children to interact, share and engage, through the medium of literature.

About Gillo:

Gillo Foundation's Theatre Repertory works in Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA), creating performing arts experiences that engage children and young adults with theatre in particular and the arts in general. Their work creates opportunities for children to develop deep and life-long connections with the arts. Since 2010 Gillo has produced 14 plays, staged over 300 shows, conducted workshops and reached over 60000 children and young people through their work.

About Bright Sparks:

Bright Sparks is an activity centre in Worli, Mumbai that was founded by RobinAge, India’s leading weekly children’s newspaper. It offers after school and vacation workshops in music, theatre, chess, creative writing, art, science, taekwondo, robotics and mathematics that are taught by leading organisations and individuals in their field. Bright Sparks was founded in 2014 and is a two-time recipient of the KidsStopPress Award for Best Activity Centre.

About the Reading Club:

Kathasagar, a reading club for children and adults, was started by Gillo and Bright Sparks in September 2017. They hosting monthly play readings focusing on an author or a theme. The reading club is aimed at opening up ways of reading, seeing, feeling and critiquing. All are welcome to read with or just listen to the group. Reading materials are provided. Texts are chosen from a range of languages and genres. Efforts are made to procure works in the original language as well as their translations in English or Hindi. Every month the group primarily reads plays, along with excerpts from short stories, novellas, poetry and picture books.

Author in focus: Ratnakar Matkari

Ratnakar Matkar is a Marathi playwright who has written 33 plays, 8 collections of one-act plays, 18 books of short stories, 3 novels, a book of poems for children, and 14 plays and three collections of plays for children. Matkari notably established in 1962 Bal Natya Sanstha (बालनाट्यसंस्था), which has thus far produced 22 plays for children, most of them being one-act plays. He performed as an actor in many of these plays, including Sangati (सांगाती), "Sharvari (शर्वरी), "Chitratale Ghar" (चित्रातले घर), and "Tumachi Goshta (तुमची गोष्ट). He is considered to be one of the most prolific contemporary writers who has written plays for children.

Venue: Bright Sparks, 11 & 12, Shah & Nahar Industrial Estate, off Dr. E Moses Road, near Furniturewalla, Worli, Mumbai, Worli.
